What Does "Discovering" Mean to Me?

What Does ‘Discovery’ Mean?
Everybody has different ideas about what discovery means. But mine might be a little different from other people’s ideas, too. To me, discovery means that you just found something and you want to make it a part of the world. Or in other words, discovery means that you had just looked at a part of the world that nobody ever saw before. Also that thing that you just found, well, discovered, people might think that the thing that you discovered is really awesome. And it actually might be a really big part of the world. Another thing I wanted to add is that in my drawling, I am looking at a really weird footprint that looks like a dinosaur footprint. And that is how I describe my drawling and what discovery means to me.

What Makes an Effective Professional Arcade Game?
What I think may be a little weird is that Sphere Runner is the kind of professional arcade game that works really well (except at my house), and is really, really fun. Sphere Runner is professional because whatever you want and expect it to do, it does. The game is really fast and just knows right away what you want it to do. The creator has a really cool name, and his name is David Carachelo. The instructions are really cool. There is a blue grid and a reddish-pink rocket. There is also a yellow fireball that is trying to destroy the rocket. The object of the game is to use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move the rocket. Also, you are trying to fill in all of the spheres by moving the rocket right through them. Once all of the spheres are filled in you get to move to the next level. The rules/instructions are displayed at the bottom of the game. Star rating: 3 out of a possible 4. You win the game by trying to fill in all spheres. If you win you will get a really nice compliment about how you played the game.

This is a really cool game. Cool stuff to build it would be cardboard boxes, bouncy balls, yellow balls, and blue marker. To build I think would probably cost $15. To buy I think would probably cost $15.

Design Brief

What is the Concept Design of My Crusie Arcade Game?
The name of our game is Go Stop It! You play the game by using the stopper and trying to get it in the smallest hole at the end of the game while trying to avoid falling in the holes. The rules will be on a separate piece of paper on the side of the game. If we could rate our game it would probably be 4 out of a 1- 4 scale (4 is the most difficult). You win the game by trying to get to the bottom of the game and by not falling in any holes or ending up in any dead ends. If you win the game and fall in the small hole you get to choose your prize, and if you fall in the medium hole you get a bouncy ball. Finally, if you fall in the big hole you get 10 cents.

Our blueprint has 3 parts: a front, top, and a side. On the top there are 2 boxes and a part of cardboard. On the side you also see 2 boxes and 2 strips of cardboard. On the front you see a path with some holes and dead ends on the game.

You would need cardboard, bouncy balls, scissors, masking tape, a clothes hanger, and a part of a Coke bottle to build this game. I would think it might take about 3 weeks. The problems that might happen with our game are that people will not go fast enough. Another problem with our game is that it might just not follow the paths.

What were the Results of Testing Our Game?

Praise: Well thought out and designed project. It’s very obvious they have improved and altered the design to make it work better. It is a lot of fun and challenging.

Question: How can you make it a little bit easier? Do you want to raise the top? Have you ever thought of using a ping pong ball? Could you have a different paddle?

Polish: Make it a little easier. Right now people will get frustrated too quickly. Make it more clearly on how many attempts people get and what counts as a drop/miss ball.

Student Comment: Thank you for saying that our game, Go Stop It!, is fun and challenging. Your comments are very helpful. We can make it easier by teaching them someone’s cheating method (kidding). Raising the top is a very good idea, but if we did raise the top more up it would be too flat, too easy, and it would be WAY too slow. We could use a ping pong ball but it is too light, and it was too late by then because it was time to present to the little kids. I do not think using a different paddle was a good idea because the paddle that we already is made from all the supplies we had planned to use such as plastic and cardboard. Your polish is very, very right. We will try to make it more clearly on how many attempts there are.

Praise: Great game, nice fine skills, eye hand coordination.

Question: Does such a game exist? I have never seen a game like this.

Polish: One could make the path a bit more labyrinthine for difficulty, or different skill levels.

Student Comment: Thank you very much for your nice comments! We enjoyed having you play our game, Go Stop It! We tried to make our game tricky by figuring out how to design a hard game with all the skills we have learned! Well, our game sure is different and challenging because of all the holes and dead ends that are in the game. Also, the paddle that we use is sort of loose because of all the stuff it is required to do in the game. So it is not a game people see every day because it is very unique. We made a little more of a challenge by really taking the time to design the game and by thinking it all out. We had the whole game sketched out and planned. And yes, this is the one and only game called Go Stop It! in the whole entire game world because you know… it is really hard and special. Yes we could make the path a bit more labyrinthine but I wanted to make it easier, not harder. And yes, we will try to make our game EASIER not HARDER because it is already very, very hard.

Examiner: Ms. Pinkard (the 1st winner)

Praise: I really like that you thought of your own game and that you made it difficult!

Question: Could you use a different ball to make the game more “winnable?”

Polish: You could make the ball track more colorful so that the player can see where the ball goes.

Student Comment: Thank you very much! We were kind of trying to make our game unique by trying to make it look like a game in a really awesome arcade. Well, using a different ball would be a good idea but we actually have a cheat… so I do not really know (joking - we only use the cheat for little kids!). Making the ball track more colorful is a really good idea but it was way too late because everyone was coming to see our games, and honestly, I do not think Maria or I wanted it to be too colorful.

Make It Better
How Can We Make the Crusie Arcade Game Better?
Reflection on Project
What can we do to improve our Arcade Creation?
I can improve my game Go Stop It by putting something bright near the path so it would be easier for people to understand where the ball would go.
Specifically, how would we do this?
We could do this by getting something bright and then taping it to the path and then it would be easier for people to understand where ball was going.
Reflection on Process
What did you learn to do with the Crusie Arcade Project?
I learned how to work with other people without disagreeing, and I learned how to make a cardboard game.
What do you know now that you didn’t know before doing the Project?

Before we did the project I didn’t know how to tape things so well to cardboard, and I didn’t know how to make a cardboard game.
What can you do now that you couldn’t before doing this project?
I can draw paths really, really well.
What did you like about the project that helped your learning?
I liked the process of because that helped my learning.
What could have been done differently to help your learning?
I think I could have focused more because that could have helped my learning.
A Final Reflection:

I can improve my game, Go Stop It, by putting something bright near the path so it would be easier for people to understand where the ball would go. Specifically, how would we do this? We could do this by getting some really bright duct tape or something to put on each side of the path so they would know more about how the game works. We made the game by cutting cardboard, taping stuff onto cardboard, taping cardboard together, and coloring cardboard. We came up with the game by combining different games together from other games that we have seen before. The game was built by thinking and brainstorming so much. We felt happy that we were exercising our brains a lot by this process of building this Crusie Arcade game. Some of the problems that we have faced before are that our board almost broke in half and that we had to start all over on the other side of the board. We felt very, very happy that we have completed our game successfully. We both had so much fun building our game; it was so much fun that it was too much fun. It was the most fun I have ever had in school!
